Just Before you Tilt

Ah, the tilt. If a poker player states never to have stared faced down the shadow of an approaching poker tilt – they’re either telling a lie or they have not been playing long enough. This does not mean of course that every player has been on tilt before, a number of players have wonderful willpower and take their losses as a hit and keep it at that. To be a good poker player, it is absolutely important to approach your successes and your defeats in the same manner – with no emotion. You play the game the same way you did following a difficult beat like you would after winning a big hand. Many of the poker masters are not charmed by tilting after a bad defeat as they are particularly accomplished and you must be to.

You have to understand that you can not win every hand you are in, even if you are the front runner. Hands that typically cause people go on tilt are hands that you were the favored or at a minimum thought you were up until you were side swiped and you squandered a huge chunk of your stack. Bad losses are bound to happen. Embrace that certainty right now, I’ll say it again – if your sister plays cards, if your parents enjoy cards, if your grandpa plays cards – We all have bad beats at some point. It is an inevitable outcome of participating in Texas Hold’em, or for that matter any kind of poker.

Seeing as we are assumingly (nearly all of us) in the game for one purpose – to acquire money, it certainly makes sense that we would gamble accordingly to maximize our profit potential. Now let us say you are up one hundred dollars off of a $100 deposit, and you take a big hit in a No Limits game and your stack is down to one hundred and twenty dollars. You have lost $80 in a hand where you were certain to pick up $200two hundred dollars when you decided to go all-in on the flop and enjoyed a ten to one advantage. And that guy! He banged you out on the river? – Well stop right here. This is a classic choice for a brand-new gambler to start tilting. They just lost too much money on one hand that they should have won and they’re pissed
